A brand new report by the TFN Education Fund has exposed a deeply entrenched "conspiracy of silence" around sex education in Texas public schools. More than 83% of Texas school districts teach abstinence-only or no sex education at all, denying high school students basic information they need to make healthy choices.
Worse yet, many districts are using materials plagued with errors and bias, lying to students about the effectiveness of condoms and teaching offensive gender stereotypes.Read the full report to find out more about what Texas students are learning about sex.
This new report is based on materials collected during the 2015-16 school year from a representative sample of Texas districts. It is a follow-up to the TFN Education Fund's 2009 study Just Say Don’t Know, a groundbreaking report that examined sex education in the state during the 2007-08 school year.
Both reports show how failed abstinence-only policies that dominate Texas public school classrooms promote ignorance in a state that has consistently had one of the highest teen birth rates in the nation.
